Pook's ipod

Hi family

Okay, so since the last post I've received numerous calls of reassurance- I'm not passive (tired, maybe). Thank you all for the well wishes (omi, I thank u). It's funny because also since that last post I've gotten other comments about my parenting and I have to agree with TT Robin, being a parent is so visible. You are always under surveillance. Especially, Black moms who are too often punished for being bad mothers. What's a newblackmommy to do? Shake it off has been my latest motto. I kinda also want to do some kind of political t-shirt thing when I go out. I would love to sport catchy slogans written across my newmommy breast (sigh) like "Did I ask you anything" or "Was your mother perfect?" or how about "I don't need advice, I need a vacation."

Anyway, Pook is doing well these days. Her two scars from recent events (a fall at daycare and a scratch from either me or her after an apparently dangerous tickle fest) are healing. Pook has had her toenails painted twice so far. I guess this is the biggest news flash- She is such a girly girl. Definitely more so than I. Her pink power (Hello Kitty barrettes purchased by Nana B is her current love affair) is all Pook. She wants to pick out her clothes (gasp) and she always goes for her dresses. Pook is one; she'll be two in Sept. And I think this all came a bit before I was ready. I have to constantly reflect on what really sparked this interest, is this a phase, or is Pook letting us know more about her taste. Can a one year old have taste and preferences? Pook does. She also has favorite songs.

What is on Pook's ipod these days, you ask?

1. ABC's (sung loud and clear)
2. "Move Move" from Dreamgirls
3. "Oh My" aka Your My Dream" from Dreamgirls
4. "Oh Oh Oh" aka "Steppin To the Bad Side" from Dreamgirls (sense a theme here? this song is her favorite though)
5. "Baby Baby Baby" by James Brown
6. "Jeepers Creepers" on her Kidsong DVD
7. "EIEIO" Pook's own version
8. Any song at church that gets Pook to raise her hands and say "Amen"
9. "Ella Ella Ella" aka "Umbrella" by Rihanna
10. "Earn My Affections" Amel Larrieux (of course you say. But, I'm amazed that its this song more than "magic" or "trouble" that Pook sings with the most).

And then of course like the dancer her mommy once was (okay still is) some of you all have witnessed Pook's first routine. We give it out as gifts and special suprises but mostly I just love to dance with Pook. Our routine (that goes to any song) is as follows:

Get down low,
salute the sun (raise arms above head),
Hands on your hip
Let your backbone slip (shake those hips)
Turn around (spin)
Happy feet (stomp really fast).

Now next time you can do it with us!! Cornynewmommy I know. But these are the days I've been waiting for. Pook and I will have "routines" for as long as she doesn't mind dancing with me in public. Hopefully a very long time. For certain our routines will only get better. And to think, the dance class I wanted to sign her up for said everyone has to be two by Sept. 1st which would leave Pook out. Whats a newmommy to do? Teach her own child, with music that is of our liking, with moves that are appreciated by family and friends.

Pook is a natural- a dancer. Full of spirit and happiness! I'm going to try and post photos soon. A video of us doing our routine would be even better. I wish I knew how to record Pook singing her ABC's on this site. Okay this all sounds good but honestly it may be later than sooner- just trust that Pook looks so much like a big girl toddler now bursting with talent.
